Supported Independent Living

Supported Independent Living (SIL) is a NDIS support so you can live in accommodation with other people, or on your own, and receive support and services to live life on your terms. Our team provide the in-home supports needed for you with our SIL Service.

Whether you're just beginning your NDIS journey, or you're looking for a change in your living situation, it's a good idea to learn about the different types of home and living supports funded under the NDIS.

This factsheet gives you information about Supported Independent Living and the process to get supports. It's aimed at NDIS participants, and carers of NDIS participants.

If you're interested in Supported Independent Living, talk to us at any stage in your NDIS journey. Our expert staff will guide you through the process.

What is Supported Independent Living (SIL) and who can access it?

  • Supported Independent Living, or SIL, refers to a group of NDIS supports that help you live more independently.
  • SIL funding pays for personal support with everyday tasks like cooking and cleaning, and activities outside the home like grocery shopping or catching public transport.
  • SIL is intended for participants with significant support needs, like a carer for most of the day.
  • The amount of SIL funding in a participant's plan depends on support needs, living arrangements, and other supports funded.
  • SIL funding doesn't pay for housing costs like rent or mortgage.

The Supported Independent Living process

  • Talk to your NDIS planner about the help you need to live in your own home.
  • Discuss your goals for independent living and the kinds of supports that will help you do this.
  • Tell the NDIA about any change in circumstances; they will contact you to talk about the supports you need.
  • Provide referrals from health professionals and any of your current carers or support workers.
  • If SIL is the best option, your planner will work with you to find a SIL provider.

Developing your roster of care and funding

Your provider will help design a roster of care tailored to your needs. This outlines daily supports, overnight assistance if required, and the staffing mix. The NDIA uses this to assess funding.

Support Type Hours (per day) Notes
Morning routine 2 Meal prep, personal care
Community access 3 Appointments, shopping
